Fall in the Tetons is a riot of color, with the golden aspens taking center stage. It?s a short-lived season though, and the jewel-bright leaves are often knocked from the trees by snowfall. On a breezy October dawn I?d found an interesting gravel road winding off into the brush besidea creek and had gone to explore. I spent a few hours walking the trail, photographing along the way when I had a sudden urge to head back to the cabin for coffee.....and that?s when I met up with Mama Griz and her two-year-old cubs. With my vehicle as a safe blind, I watched as Mama led her kids up the same path I?d just left and followed at a discrete and safe distance on foot as they disappeared into the willows where I had been taking photos just moments before. I had been given a brief but awe-inspiring glimpse at one of the most powerful and majestic beings still free in the wild and when our eyes met, I suddenly understood why the Native Americans call Bear ?First Man?.
